Introduction to Wood Turning for Beginners

Interested in learning a new skill or starting a fun hobby?

This introductory course will give you a great overview of Wood Turning.

The session lasts between 3 to 4 hours, depending on how quickly you pick things up. You’ll be introduced to the lathe, learn how to select the right wood, discover the tools used in turning, and understand how to finish your piece. Health and safety practices will also be covered.

The course takes place in our dedicated workshop at Cockenzie House and Gardens.

All materials and equipment are provided; just wear clothes that you don’t mind getting covered in shavings!

Courses run from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

No previous experience is needed—you’ll be learning hands-on.

We offer one-on-one instruction, unless attending with a family member.

The cost of the course is £90. With discount £81


Bowl Turning Course

This course is for the beginner moving on to bowl turning.

This course will be 4-5 hrs depending how you pick things up, if you haven’t used a lathe before we will learn the different parts of the lathe. You will learn about the selection of the wood and what tools to use when turning a bowl.
Also you will learn how to finish the bowl. As well as health and safety.

The course is run in our dedicated room within Cockenzie House and Gardens

All equipment and wood will be provided, the only thing that you will need is clothes that can get covered in shavings.

We can run this courses 9.30am to 2.30pm

No prior knowledge is needed.

All courses are 1 to 1 unless with a family member.

Pen Turning Course

This course can be for any turner from beginner upwards wanting to learn Pen Turning

This course will be 4-5 hrs depending how you pick things up, we will go through how to use the lathe for beginners, then on to the different types of pen kits, the different pen blanks wood and acrylic. How to prepare the pen blanks for turning, then tool selection for turning the pens. With this course you will make 3 pens altogether, 1 slimline Pen made with wood , 1 Key ring pen made with wood or acrylic and then end on one of the roller pens made with wood or acrylic.
We will also run through Health and safety in the workshop.

The course will be run in our dedicated room here in Cockenzie House and Gardens.

All equipment,kits and blanks are supplied for the course, the only thing that you have to bring is clothes that can get covered in wood Shavings and dust.

We can run these courses  9.30am to 2.30pm

No prior knowledge needed but having done some wood turning would be a advantage.
